First session
The first session is an assessment session, which lasts for 50 minutes. During the
assessment (which can sometimes go over two sessions) the psychologist aims to develop
an understanding of the difficulties being faced by the client. The psychologist
does this by asking the client questions about their present circumstances and difficulties
and also about past experiences and important events. The psychologist then discusses
with the client what he or she hopes to achieve from therapy. Using these goals,
the psychologist can develop a treatment plan collaboratively with the client.

Further sessions
Clients usually attend sessions once a week at a time that has been agreed upon
by both client and psychologist. Each session lasts for 50 minutes. Depending on
the nature of the client's issues, therapy can either be short-term or long-term.
The treatment plan developed in the assessment session is regularly reviewed by
the client and the psychologist and, if necessary, it is modified accordingly.
Psychologists in training
RPS is able to offer students who are training in counselling psychology or counselling
personal psychological therapy and supervision for their clinical practice at reduced
rates.
